Family Life Education

The National Directory for Catechesis (NDC, Chapter 6, 178) calls for catechesis in human sexuality which "recognizes the duty of pastors and parish catechetical leaders to support and encourage parents as they carry out their role as educators of their children in human sexuality as well as to provide additional instructions regarding Catholic teaching and values that complement and complete the formation provided by parents. St. Francis of Assisi complies with this directive by offering a variety of programs for children in grades K through 12.

As an integral part of our faith formation curriculum, we will be teaching Catechesis for Family Life.  The basic text books used at St. Francis of Assisi Parish  in Grades K-5 are from the RCL Benziger Family Life Series, RCL Benziger Publishers.  Grades K-3 have family life integrated into their weekly session chapters.  Grades 4 and 5 have specific dates designated for family life teaching.  This age appropriate program about Christian living, chastity, character formation and safe environment training promoted communication between the parent and their child.  After examining the program, if a parent chooses not to have their child participate in these sessions (Grades 4 and 5 only) they must sign a declination letter must be signed.

Eucharist and Reconciliation Preparation

As Baptized children reach the age of discretion (about age 7 for most) they are invited to prepare for the Sacraments of Eucharist and Reconciliation.  Children must be currently enrolled in an approved Faith Formation Program and must also have one year of formal Faith Formation prior to beginning Sacrament preparation.  Sacramental preparation takes place outside of and in addition to regular Faith Formation sessions and requires a separate registrationRegistration forms/fees and a copy of the child's Baptismal certificate are necessary.  Parent/Child meetings are held in October for Reconciliation and in early Spring for Eucharist preparation.
