Young People at Liturgy

Engaging Young People at Mass

Did you know that we have several ways for young people to connect more fully at Mass?

  • Children’s Mass – the 1st Sunday of each month at 11:00 Mass, elementary-aged children are invited to sit on the steps of the sanctuary for a kid-friendly homily.
  • Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) – the 3rd Sunday each month at 9:00 Mass, children ages 4-9 gather in the Chapel to hear the Word of God in a more simplified version and to interactively participate in the homily and prayers. The children return to their families in the Church to participate with the rest of the worshipping community in the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
  • Youth Mass – quarterly on the 4th Sunday of the month at 9:00 Mass, Assisi Youth Music Ministry leads the congregation in song, a young person shares a reflection on the Sunday Gospel, and youth are invited to serve as ushers and lectors.
  • Children's Worship Bulletins - these are available to your right as you enter the building. They are helpful for young children to learn about the readings in an age-appropriate way during Mass.

The Faith Formation program also focuses on scripture readings from Mass each month and provides resources for children, youth, and families to reflect on the readings and follow along during Mass.

We encourage families to sit in the Church together and only take children to the Gathering Space if they’re really upset. If you have young children, sit towards the front so that they can see the altar. It’s helpful to whisper an explanation of what is happening in the sanctuary or answer questions. Setting an example of singing and responding also helps young people to engage more fully in the liturgy.

What is CLOW?

Children's Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) is a special part of the 9:00 am Sunday Liturgy on the third Sunday of each month. This is an opportunity for children, ages 4-9, to gather in a separate space to hear the Word of God in a more simplified version and to interactively participate in the homily and prayers. The children will be invited forward and dismissed by the presider to follow the leader to the Chapel.  The children return to their families in the Church to participate with the rest of the worshipping community in the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Parents are welcome to join their children.

CLOW provides a wonderful opportunity to involve our young children in the liturgy at a level they can better understand. We seek to show each child that they are important participants in the Liturgy of the Word, thereby enriching the entire parish family.

Parent Support

Parents play a critical role in preparing the children to attend CLOW and are encouraged to ask them about each week’s readings and lessons.

We ask for parental assistance in reminding your child that he/she is still in Church and should exhibit the appropriate behavior while attending CLOW, including listening attentively, walking in and out quietly with hands folded in a prayerful posture over their hearts, standing for the Gospel, etc.  Asking questions after Mass about what they heard in the readings and what the leaders discussed will give you a good indication of how well they paid attention.

Ministry Opportunities

Children's Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) is a wonderful, rewarding experience for both the children and the leaders. The only requirement is your desire to answer God's calling to share your faith with the youngest members of our parish community! Teens or adults interested in assisting with the Children's Liturgy of the Word should contact Becki Kaman.

All volunteers will be asked to complete VIRTUS Training for the safety and protection of our children.
